A Borzoi Center of Excellence

Ouragan was  an amazing borzoi. He came to us at 10 weeks old via Gisela Minder, owner of his sire, World Champion Oval Racer Limbachi Harkov. From the day we picked him up in Leon, France, to the day he said goodbye he was  unique and special. As a puppy he thought every human should pet him and every dog should play with him. One of his favorite jobs was to be the leader and conductor of the  ZoiBoyz chorus. He would put his two front legs on Tom’s shoulders and howl until he got the entire pack howling in unison. What a beautiful song it always was and it will be missed immensely.  His other self chosen job was to become the ZoiBoyz Pack protector.  He had tremendous courage and would come between any aggressor and the pack. On one occasion, KC was walking our 4 ZoiBoyz at night when she and the hounds were attacked by an off line, aggressive German Shepherd. KC went to the ground, Ouragan broke free and successfully protected KC and the pack from the aggressor. Ouragan also was  an athlete  with the heart to overcome an inflexible back. His unique running style earned him several titles that are listed below. We believe that he developed his blazing speed due to his kennel mate and playmate Silkenswift Ambassador always chasing him down. Ouragan was always the bunny in their games. In June 2007, Ouragan broke a nail on his LF foot. After several weeks of treatments I took him to a different vet for more diagnosis. Ouragan was using his LF leg less and less and it was unclear what  the exact problem was. He finally got referred to the University of Colorado Veterinary School in October. After intensive tests he was diagnosed with cancer of the brachial nerve sheath. The tumor had already  grown so large that it was inoperable. Our plan would be make Ouragan as comfortable as possible through pain management until that was no longer an option. Ouragan maintained his singing job up until near the end. It was clear over the last couple of weeks that the tumor was growing and it was taking more and more meds to help him. The last night he was so uncomfortable that he cried in pain every time he tried to move. The pressure on the nerves was such that he could not get relief. The pain meds would only give him minutes before he would feel the need to move again. We did the only humane thing left to do and that was to let him cross the bridge and be whole and pain free again. Ouragan went to sleep in Tom’s arms, relaxed and calm . He will be leading a different chorus now and we will look forward to one day hearing that wonderful  sound when we meet again.

Good Bye sweet Ouragan. You are missed by us all.
